<title>Details on the 2009 IRA RMD Withdrawal Rules</title>
<link>http://deckertleahy.com/news/weblog.php?id=P11</link>
<description>First, the simple part. Withdrawals for individuals who are currently taking their required minimum distribution (RMD) have been given the ability to suspend taking them for 2009. This can provide a small relief for those whose IRA or 401K accounts have taken a beating during the last 18 months. It will hopefully allow account holders some time so their accounts may build back up. This suspension of withdrawals affects all Regular IRA, Rollover IRA, SEP IRA, and Inherited IRA Holders.

Folks who turn 70 1/2 this year will not have to take their withdrawal for this year either. Normally, you could take your first withdrawal in the year in which you turn 70 1/2 OR delay until April 1st of the following tax year and take it in that year. In this example, by April 1st of 2010.

Under normal circumstances, delaying until the next year does not forgive the rule saying you have to take your normal 2010 distribution. you would, essentially, have to take TWO distributions if you had used the delay privilege under the current codes. The temporary cod ethat is now in place allows you a reprieve so you can 'skip' what could have been your 2009 distribution
